Edward Cardwell, Founder of Cardwell Ranch

Edward Cardwell acquired Cardwell Ranch in 1889, prior to Montana’s statehood. Looking forward and realizing the potential of the property, he installed drainage and irrigation systems that facilitated productive hay crops that were used by the family's cattle operation throughout the winter while native grasses fell dormant.

The descendants of Edward Cardwell have had an opportunity to observe the areas surrounding Cardwell Ranch build and prosper. In 1991 an eighteen (18) hole public golf course was constructed on a portion of the ranch. It provides a rare opportunity to enjoy relaxing recreation within walking distance from any location on Cardwell Ranch. The guidelines created for this vast 475 acre master planned development reflect the heritage of the land as well as the family's vision to continue progressing with the community, ensuring that both the land and those live and work here continue to flourish.
